Barnham Nuclear

Bomb Store

RAF Barnham, a scheduled cold war site, was built as a servicing facility for the UK’s first operational free-fall atomic bomb, Blue Danube.

The project involves the repair and restoration of a number of scheduled and grade II* listed structures including security installations such as the watchtowers.

The site and its structures were purposely designed to handle this particular weapon, and this is reflected in the design of the small stores or ‘hutches’ designed to hold fissile cores.  A group of hutches has been fully restored.

Currently repairs are being carried out to the reinforced concrete gantries that handled the high explosive body of the bomb.
